The weekend football kicked-off at Selhurst Park, with Crystal Palace playing Chelsea. Chelsea, the table leaders, managed a difficult 1-0 victory courtesy to Diego Costa’s 13th goal of the Premier League season; as Chelsea extended their lead to 9 points at the top. The victory also extended Chelsea’s winning streak to 11, with a 3rd 1-0 score-line on the trot.
The match was followed by Stoke City hosting struggling champions Leicester City at Bet365 Stadium. Stoke City comfortably took a 2-0 lead as Jamie Vardy of Leicester City was controversially sent off for a two-legged challenge, but a late resurgence saw Leicester City score two, as the match ended 2-2. Elsewhere, Sunderland managed a 1-0 home victory against Watford, as they climbed out of the bottom position to 18th, and above Swansea City and Hull City who respectively lost in their away games to Middlesbrough and West Ham United. In the last match of the day, a Zlatan Ibrahimovic brace gave Manchester United a comfortable 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.
On Sunday, Bournemouth hosted Southampton in the South Coast Derby. Nathan Aké helped Bournemouth in to the lead, but Southampton stole the show as they came back to win 3-1 with Jay Rodriguez scoring his first goals of the season. Southampton’s only 2nd win on the travel. Next up, Manchester City hosted Arsenal, heavyweight fixture of the week. Simultaneously, Tottenham Hotspur hosted Burnley. Arsenal quickly got the lead with Theo Walcott’s 8th goal of the Premier League season in just 5 minutes, but Manchester City came back to win it 2-1 in the second half as Leroy Sané scored his first Manchester City goal, and Raheem Sterling completing the comeback. Tottenham Hotspur also ensured their comeback win against Burnley with a similar 2-1 score-line as they made sure every team to score the first goal of the game, for the day, lost.
In a late Monday night fixture, Everton will host Liverpool for Merseyside Derby. Everton could climb to the 7th position with a victory, or the favourites Liverpool could cut Chelsea’s lead to 6 points and avoid dropping to 3rd, if they win.
