Made in India
1. Your journey as an author..
I am an accidental writer. In my college days I never thought I would become a writer. I don’t have any literature inheritance. I wish to be a cricketer. The whole scenario changed when I moved to Gulf in my early twenties. There I really started my reading career, for almost seven to eight years I was a round the bend reader. I must have completed hundreds of books in that stage. From pulp to world classic, from poems to novel, From Science to fiction. You just name it absolutely anything from trash to classics. Later I attempted to write some book reviews. I guess that kind of revealed my creativity. Slowly I moved to writing fiction. Loneliness, boredom, depression, numbness and excess time of gulf life made me a writer.
2. Tell us about your best seller book : "Goat Days"
The story is based on the true account of such a hapless soul who had to undergo the cruelties of slavery in a country which was alien to him. For me it was really shocking to know that the habit practiced by a society for such long periods of time dies a hard death and is still in existence in certain areas. Though the depiction in the plot is mainly dealing with animal like sufferings encountered by the protagonist Najeeb.
There are so many ‘one column news’ which we go through regularly in newspapers that easily says that ‘found a man in desert after a long missing period’ or ‘a man who forgot his language’ or ‘a man with undecipherable stage’ like that… amidst the ever happening scandals and scintillating stories the readers also doesn’t pay much attention to it or ponder over such human stories.
When I heard about this man from a friend I decided to meet him. I met him many times and slowly unfolded his pitiful life on desert and what he went through. He told me his life in details. It was an unusual story and I was in no doubt that, this is the story I was waiting to tell the world and my conviction paid in full.
Millions of Indians lives in gulf countries, there must be many writers among them, I think there is no other work in any Indian language which portrays the wild allurement of desert life in such graphical precision and detailing and I am sure that is why It drew unprecedented acclaims from readers and critics within a short span of time.
3. Would you like to throw some light on your UAE banned book "Al Arabian Novel Factory"?
Those are ‘Al Arabian Novel Factory’ and ‘A Spring without Smell.’ It is a twin novel based on same subject with different perspective. We can start with any book. But both are inter-linked many ways. That is the construction style of the books.
The subject discussed on recent Arab spring, its reasons, after effect and most significantly political views, religious conflict and current affairs of Arab society in oil age.
4. Your message to the writer's community...
This is the time to open up your real card. Readers are keenly watching.
